Artificial intelligence has become a constant companion in our daily digital lives. From smartphones to email platforms, AI-powered tools now assist users with tasks such as writing messages, filling out forms, and drafting documents. One of the most common of these tools is AI autocomplete, which predicts and suggests the next words or sentences as people type. While this technology is designed to save time and make writing easier, emerging research suggests that its influence goes far beyond convenience. In fact, AI autocomplete may not only shape how we write but also subtly influence how we think.
AI autocomplete tools are now integrated into many digital platforms, including messaging apps, online surveys, search engines, and professional communication tools. They use machine-learning algorithms to analyze patterns in language and provide suggestions for completing sentences or phrases. The goal is to help users write faster and more efficiently by predicting what they might want to say next. Although many people appreciate the time-saving benefits, others find these suggestions intrusive or even distracting. In some cases, users report that reviewing and editing AI suggestions can take more time than simply writing the message themselves.
Beyond these practical concerns, researchers have started to explore a deeper question: Can AI suggestions influence the ideas people express and the beliefs they hold? A recent study conducted by researchers at Cornell University suggests that the answer may be yes. The research indicates that AI autocomplete can subtly sway people’s attitudes and opinions, even when they do not directly use the AI-generated suggestions.
The study was led by Mor Naaman, a professor of information science at Cornell University, who has been studying the social impact of AI-driven writing tools. Naaman and his colleagues had previously published research in 2023 showing that short autocomplete suggestions could influence users’ opinions. Since then, the use of AI writing tools has grown dramatically, prompting researchers to investigate the issue more closely.
In the new study, participants were asked to complete an online survey that included questions about controversial social and political topics. These issues were chosen because they tend to provoke strong opinions and personal beliefs. Some participants received AI autocomplete suggestions while answering the questions. Importantly, the researchers intentionally designed some of these suggestions to contain a bias toward a particular viewpoint.
For example, when participants were asked whether they agreed that the death penalty should be legal, the AI suggestion might recommend a response opposing the death penalty. Other topics in the survey also included suggestions that leaned clearly toward one side of the debate. The purpose of the experiment was to determine whether exposure to these biased suggestions would influence the participants’ final responses.
The results were striking. Across many of the topics in the survey, participants who were exposed to biased AI autocomplete suggestions reported opinions that were closer to the position suggested by the AI. Even more surprising was the fact that this effect occurred even among participants who did not actually use the AI’s suggested text. Simply seeing the suggestion appeared to influence their thinking.
This finding suggests that the presence of AI-generated language can subtly shape people’s attitudes, perhaps by presenting certain viewpoints as more normal, reasonable, or socially acceptable. Over time, repeated exposure to similar suggestions could potentially reinforce particular ideas or perspectives.
Another important discovery from the study was that participants generally did not recognize the influence of the AI suggestions. Most people did not perceive the autocomplete prompts as biased, nor did they realize that their opinions had shifted during the experiment. Even when researchers warned participants that the AI suggestions might contain misinformation or bias, the effect still persisted.
According to Naaman, this result highlights how powerful AI systems can be in shaping user behavior. The researchers informed participants both before and after the survey that the AI might produce biased suggestions, yet this warning did not significantly reduce the influence of the prompts. Participants’ attitudes still moved closer to the AI’s position.
The implications of these findings are significant. As AI writing assistants become more widespread, they may gradually influence public discussions and individual beliefs. Because autocomplete suggestions often appear as neutral technological assistance, users may not question them as carefully as they would information from other sources.
In everyday communication, this influence might appear harmless—such as making emails sound more polite or professional. However, when the technology is used in contexts involving political opinions, social issues, or public debates, the potential impact becomes more concerning. Even small shifts in individual opinions could add up to larger changes in collective attitudes over time.
Experts believe that this research highlights the need for greater transparency and oversight in AI systems. Developers may need to carefully consider how autocomplete algorithms are trained and ensure that they do not unintentionally promote particular viewpoints. At the same time, users should remain aware that AI suggestions are generated by algorithms that may reflect biases in the data used to train them.
As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, tools like autocomplete will likely become even more sophisticated and deeply integrated into everyday communication. While these technologies offer undeniable benefits in efficiency and convenience, the Cornell study serves as a reminder that AI systems can also influence human thought in subtle ways.
Ultimately, the challenge for society will be finding a balance between embracing the advantages of AI-assisted writing and maintaining independent critical thinking. Autocomplete may help finish our sentences, but it should not finish our thoughts for us
